3rd-5th Problem Solving: M&M’s World (÷, comparison)

Meeting your kiddos where they are and growing each and every one of their understandings of math can be a challenge. Especially this year when you undoubtedly are trying to offer kids extra support. Am-i-right?

Getting math physically in their hands so that they can be the ones who are in charge of testing ideas and discovery is the fastest way to understanding!

When you put Math Stackers in the hands of your students, they have the power to problem solve and SEE how the math is working.

They are interacting with math which in return allows them to process what is going on and store all of those discoveries in their amazing, squishy, spongelike brains...to then be used over and over again!

What better way to exercise this math learning process that to investigate and form a conclusion about real world problems like...buying loads of candy!!! :)

We presented this problem to 2 kiddos: Benny and Lucas, and were floored by the amount of math reasoning they showed! Benny and Lucas get right into this problem solving situation with 2 different ideas of how to solve it! Not only that, but they come to 2 different conclusions, using deep math thinking in their explanations! Don’t you just love it when your kiddos think independently and have the confidence to try something different???

With Math Stackers, taking risks and connecting ideas becomes second nature!

Want to watch this problem get solved in action? Head to Math Stackers U, and access the Problem Solving for grades 3rd-5th playlist! Not only will you see a full length video of how Benny and Lucas solved it differently, but you will also get a PDF download of the problem solving activity card!

Here’s a visual map of how Benny solved it! You’ll have to watch the video in Math Stackers U to see how Lucas solved it, and the reasoning of why they chose different options in the end!

Now THAT is a whole lotta math thinking! We LOVE it when kiddos use what they see in the math to make decisions! What did your students choose?
